A BREAK FROM THE NORM Vol. 1: TRUTH OR NOT TRUTH?

What if you woke up 30 years from now to found out that everything you knew was a lie?

REALLY... THINK ABOUT THAT.

Pockets of Japanese soldiers had that exact experience, including one HIROO ONODA who, 30 years after the Japanes surrended, KEPT ON FIGHTING WORLD WAR II. No, he wasn't crazy. No, he wasn't angry. He LEGITAMATELY BELIEVED THAT THE WAR WAS STILL GOING ON.

REMEMBER, I said that HE WAS OF SOUND MIND.

Evidentally Onoda, an intel officer, was sent to a Phillipine island with a small group of soldiers with extensive guerilla warfare training and instructions to badger the enemy until hs commanding officers came and got him.

For 30 years, they never came.

What was SUPPOSE to happen is Japan was SUPPOSE TO WIN... Hiroo Onoda and his fellow Japanese officers and subordinates would capture several local storehouses and airstrips, securing the island; except non-cooperation from other Japanese resulted in a rather quick Allied takeover of the Phillipines' Lubang Island.

Oh: and the chap was deployed in 1944, so it wasn't long 'til American forces dropped the A-bomb, ultimately forcing the Japanese to surrender.

Except Onoda didn't get the memo until YEARS LATER... And even then the info he recieved was treated as propaganda sent by "the enemy". I don't blame him, until again uears later SEARCH PARTIES were sent for his squad; Japanese officials wandered the jungle with LOUDSPEAKERS announcing the war had long ended; and PERSONAL LETTERS FROM THE SQUAD'S FAMILY were AIR-DROPPED over the squad's proximity.

EVENTUALLY, Onoda was found by a traveling Japanese student backpacking the world. The student had "find Onoda" on a list with "find the Abominable Snowman.". Incredibly the student succeeded where professionals had failed for years. The student, failing to persuade Onoda to come home, left Onoda and roused the then-retired Major Taniguchi, who then returned to Onoda to relieve him of his duties.

ONODA'S WORLD OF THIRTY YEARS SUDDENLY ENDED.

After he got over the shock, he surrendered his sword to the Fillipine President and was pardoned of his war crimes.

Recieving 30 years' pay from Japan, Onoda then became a philanthropist and a teacher, opening his own survival school.

The thought that I got from the story, and the thought that I want to leave you all with, is this: IMAGINE GOING THROUGH LIFE CHOOSING TO BELIEVE THAT RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS IS OPTIONAL, ONLY TO WAKE UP ONE DAY TO FIND OUT YOU WERE DEAD WRONG.*

Onoda also has a biography entitled 'NO SURRENDER: MY THIRTY YEAR WAR'.

I stumbled upon this story via the following site: http://www.TodayIFoundOut.com/index.php/2010/02/a-japanese-soldier-who-continued-fighting-wwii-29-years-after-the-japanese-surrendered-because-he-didnt-know/

"Never complain. When I did, my mother said that if I didn’t like my life, I COULD JUST GIVE UP AND DIE..." [Ddddaaaannnngggg! That's good patenting! #Hardcore!] "...She reminded me that when I was inside her, I told her that I wanted to be born, so she delivered me, breastfed me and changed my diapers. She said that I had to be brave." HIROO ONODA
