On That Note

"Fantastic Voyage" single artwork
Come along, pack your bags, get on up and jam y'all.  Come and ride on the funk.  We are taking a fantastic voyage and going to the land of funk.  If you know anything about funk music of the late 70s and early 80s, you might already know the subject of this week's "On That Note."  If not, I'll lay it on you: Lakeside's "Fantastic Voyage."

Forget everything you think you knew about bass.  This track is bass euphoria.  I don't say that lightly.  My gosh.  If this doesn't get you moving, at least mentally, I am not sure what will.  Rewind to 1980.  Lakeside released the single, changed the world, and put Dayton, Ohio on the map in topping the R&B and placing 55th on Billboard Hot 100.  Coolio, a notable hip-hop artist from the mid-90s, used the track to sample his own track with the same title.  The track was also used in Disney's 1996 comedy First Kid.  (I think the song is edited in the film in the it is raised a half or whole step but I'm not sure.)  I remember seeing this segment of the film at 8 years old and thinking "Man, that is a great song and Sinbad is brilliant."

Until next time
