Facebook went down, but it wasn't out

"Earlier today we made a change to our DNS infrastructure and that change resulted in some people being temporarily unable to reach the site. We detected and resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100 percent. We apologize for any inconvenience." - Facebook

Yesterday, Facebook went down for a few hours.  As they stated in their public message, the fault came when they switched to a new DNS, which stands for 'Domain Name System'.  The fact that the world's most powerful social media went down was enough to cause panic, but it also came just a few hours after Google's services, including Gmail, went down due to technical reasons.  Naturally, those on Twitter and Google Plus (which most likely saw a skyrocketing number of page views) believed the Mayan Calendar was coming to its end.
